Centro de Estudos de Teatro
(Centre for Theatre Studies)
The Centre for Theatre Studies was set up in November 1994. It is a research unit financially supported by the Foundation for Science and Technology in Portugal (a branch of the Ministry for Science and Technology) and is located at the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon.
It engages 25 researchers and its scientific director is presently Maria João Almeida.
One of its more important assets is a very good collection of books and journals (Arquivo Osório Mateus) that has recently been donated to the main library of the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon: some books are scanned and can be read online (there is a special link on our website: OM).
Besides developing three main lines of research - Theatre Edition, Iconography and Theatre History in Portugal -, the Centre is co-editor of a theatre journal Sinais de cena, has edited both a CD-Rom edition (of Portuguese plays of the sixteenth century) and several books (texts, essays, proceedings of international conferences it has organized) and is responsible for a graduate course on Theatre Studies at the Faculty (2nd and 3rd cycles after Bologne Agreement).
