Organiser / Host: Centro de Estudos de Teatro (Centre for Theatre Studies)

This research unit located at the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon, will organise the Conference. It aims to involve in the organising effort not only researchers (both senior and junior), graduate students, teachers (and students) of various Portuguese universities and Polytechnics, but also theatre practitioners, in a most co-operative and dynamic way.
The Organising Committee (researchers of the Centre and teachers from other universities) will be assisted by younger researchers and graduate students. An Advisory Committee (with Portuguese and international researchers) will be in charge of reading and discussing the abstract proposals.

Kay McDonnell New Scholars’ Forum
Postgraduate and early-career researchers are invited to present their work in the Kay McDonnell New Scholars’ Forum. The forum features several panels of 10-minute presentations in which participants can give a brief account of a research project and raise questions of methodology, sources and conceptual approach. Panels are designed to facilitate extended discussion and feedback, and papers proposed do not need to address the conference theme. Panels will be chaired by an experienced academic and scheduled to avoid overlap with general conference sessions so that other delegates can attend. Abstracts of 200-250 words in Times New Roman 12, accompanied by a brief biographical note establishing New Scholar status, should be submitted by January 30th 2009 deadline (to Helen Gilbert: Helen.gilbert@rhul.ac.uk). Further information at: http://www.firt-iftr.org

New Scholars are defined as either graduate students or post-doctoral researchers whose PhDs have been completed less than three years prior to abstract submission. Researchers without PhDs who have been in an academic post for less than three years also qualify as New Scholars.

New Scholars Workshops
Workshops on different aspects of career-building, publishing and/or the international job market are included in the conference programme. These are free to New Scholars and no registration is necessary. Topics for 2009 will be announced when the draft programme is issued. A luncheon is scheduled for the first day of the conference to give New Scholars the opportunity to meet each other and members of the IFTR/FIRT Executive. In 2009 a Caucus will be set up at the conference for New Scholars to discuss matters of interest and formulate ideas and/or concerns to be taken to the Executive.

New Scholars Essay Prize
IFTR/FIRT runs an annual essay competition for New Scholars. First prize consists of a one-year membership to the Federation, economy travel to attend the 2009 conference, accommodation for its duration at the student rate or equivalent, and conference registration. The winning essay will be published in Theatre Research International. Second prize is accommodation (at the student rate or equivalent), registration for the conference and a one-year membership to the Federation. Third prize is conference registration and a one-year membership to the Federation. The judges will also select three of the submitted essays for mentoring development by senior scholars.

Helsinki Prize
The Helsinki Prize is awarded to a promising New Scholar or Staff Member who originates from a developing country and who is participating in the IFTR/FIRT conference for the first time. The prize consists of economy travel to attend the conference, accommodation for its duration at the student rate or equivalent, registration and a one-year membership to IFTR/FIRT (which includes three issues of Theatre Research International).

Essays for both prizes must be no more than 4000 words in length (excluding bibliography) and should not be published or submitted for publication at the time of entry. Full guidelines can be found at: http://www.firt-iftr.org. Send entries by email attachment to Steve Wilmer at swilmer@tcd.ie by 1 December 2008. Winners will be notified by 15 January 2009.

Bursaries
The IFTR/FIRT invites applications for bursaries in order to encourage and assist less experienced scholars, or scholars who are unable to find support in their own countries, to attend the Lisbon conference. The submission deadline is 1 December 2008. Further information and application forms can be found at: www.firt-iftr.org. Submit completed applications to Morris at gay.morris@uct.ac.za. Awards will be announced by the end of January 2009.
